In a four hour marathon of a city council meeting last week each member of the council weighed in what items they would like to either add or remove from the 2024 city budget.
When Melissa Worthen, District 2 council member, got to speak, if was obvious no one was listening. First she wanted to hire another part-time employees to help with council administrative tasks (in addition to the existing three person staff already assigned).
Apparently Worthen had requested information from Alan Anderson justifying the new expense, but failed to share this information with any one else on the council.
The bulk of Worthen’s time was spent trying to get the long anticipated West Jordan Arts Center project shelved because it won’t serve the entire community. She also said the project would be too small to pull in people from other cities to go to a show and then spend more money in West Jordan
“I’m asking for can we pull this from the budget and work on something that actually will support the entire Community.
To Worthen’s concern about not serving everyone in West Jordan, David Pack, District 4 council member, deftly responded, “Thank you I appreciate the Zeal and enthusiasm I always want to hear all sides I the idea of servicing the entire Community I think we have different niche areas I mean the tennis courts in our city or the pickle ball courts are the senior center that they don’t really service all the community but you have a diversity of amenities that serve
hopefully a majority of the population.”
In the end it was clear Worthen didn’t have the backing of enough council members to even consider her proposals. Even Kathleen Whitlock withdrew her luke-warm support to suspend approval pending RFP responses.
